Tips for Setting Goals in 2008
Committed to achieving your professional goals in the new year? Follow these tips to get to the finish line:
- Set specific goals. “Improve my business” is extremely vague when you consider all of the possible factors that could go into “improvement.” Try something like, “Increase client base by 20%” or “Earn a raise within 6 months.”
- Break bigger targets into smaller tasks. Don’t get overwhelmed with an insurmountable goal. Instead, work backwards from your end point and figure out what steps you can take along the way. For instance, if you want to work your way from manager to assistant, plot out the career path you need to take to get there.
- Commit your goals to paper. By writing your goals down somewhere, you make them more real. All the better if you talk with someone about your goals so you have increased accountability and a support system.
Among the best ways to reach your goals is to think of goals and resolutions not as another item on the to-do list, but rather as a promise you make to yourself to improve your life.
