Organizing Your Office

by Kristen King on January 9th, 2008

Keeping Your Office Organized Is No Easy Job!Like Bridget, I have “organize my office” at the top of my to-do list for the year, followed closely by “write a business plan.” And last weekend, after putting it off for several months, I finally organized all of the stuff I need to file. Did I file it? No way. After making a “personal” and a “business” pile, I was exhausted and needed a glass of wine and a nap (which turned into two glasses of wine and going to bed, but who’s counting).

I’m one of those people who are determined to get and stay organized but just have a hard time sticking with it. Two resources that have helped me get closer to following through with personal and professional organization are Declutter It! and My Organized Biz, both of which offer real-life advice and seriously practical solutions for getting things in order in the office and around the house.

And if you think your office is seriously beyond repair, this may make you feel better.

I have never in my life been so disorganized. And I don’t even have time to THINK about getting organized!
    Thanks for the post.

Jean, I know the feeling! We both need to remember to break it into smaller tasks instead of letting ourselves get overwhelmed looking at the whole thing at once. Little steps, little steps.

My best organizing tip is the 15 min. rule. Just take 15 min. everyday to “organize” something in your office and eventually you’ll be where you need to be. Most the time- I find myself starting out with the “dreaded” 15 min., then realize it really isn’t all that bad- I’ll keep going! Goodluck:)

My mom always told me not to put anything somewhere “for now”, but to put it in its proper place the first time. Kind of like “Do it right the first time and you won’t have to do it again!” It works well when I actually do it.

Bertie, I must say that your comment is a great rule I just wish I could master. In those 15 minutes, I get so distracted doing “extra” things that I often get frustrated. I suppose, focus is the key.

Jill, good mom advice. Kind of like everything has a home and a home for everything!
