Lead, Manage, and Sell — You Do Them Every Day, Whether You Realize It or Not
At least, that’s what Miki over at Leadership Turn says in her recent post “The Functions of Living.”To make sure we’re all on the same page, Miki defines the terms for us:
- Lead - “to go before or with to show the way”
- Manage - “to be in charge”
- Sell - “to persuade or induce someone to do something”
For me, I see these functions in my business every day. I guide my clients through their various projects, I manage project timelines and information to create a finished product, and I sell myself and my services to prospects.
But I also see these functions in my daily life, in things that have nothing to do with my business. I lead when I walk my dogs as their “pack leader.” I manage myself and my household as I drag myself out of bed (I am not a morning person) and balance chores, eating, getting the mail, all of the mundane stuff we deal with in daily life. And I sell every time I ask my husband to unload the dishwasher/make dinner/vacuum… You can’t tell from looking at the house this week, but I am very persuasive.
These may seem like low-level examples, but Miki’s right, if you ask me — we’re all leaders, managers, and sellers even if we don’t see if that way.
What do you think?
