10 Business Rules College Doesn’t Teach You

by Kristen King on July 9th, 2008

My pal Clay of The Growing Life, whom I met at SOBCon08 in Chicago, shouted this article to me via Digg: 8 On-The-Job Rules You Unfortunately Won’t Learn in College. Check ‘em out:

  1. You don’t know how to manage yet.
  2. Everything’s a negotiation.
  3. Networking has changed.
  4. You must create your own work.
  5. Work is never done.
  6. All work is not done sitting in front of a computer.
  7. Everyone looks out for themselves.
  8. Straight A’s will not make you a CEO, only a great entry level employee.

It’s a MUST READ, even for those of us who’ve been out of college for a while.

Now, you probably noticed that the title of this post is 10 rules, and there are only 8 in the article. Good job! Apparently college did teach you basic math. :) Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with Rules 9 and 10 that college didn’t teach you. Leave a comment!

Being the perfect worker who does everything asked and obeys all the rules is… forgettable. Find a way to be remarkable.

Great observation, Lindsay. Do you have any ideas about how someone could be remarkable on the job?

    Great post, K.

FWIW, a couple I learned at UCLA (University on the Corner of Lexington Avenue)…

    9. Politics is part of the skill set for getting ahead.

    10. Believe it or not, you really are expendable.

Thanks, Mark. I’m not good at politics or accepting my own expendability. That’s a bit part of why I freelance. :)
